If you are debating whether or not counseling is for you I have some news…. We are not in a world where counselling is no longer taboo! As a counsellor I have seen the growth in conversations about personal development and people openly speaking about their counselling journey’s (cue sigh of relief!).

One of the biggest misconceptions about counselling is that you only need counselling if you are in a crisis. This is the farthest from the truth. Seeking therapy and attending therapy while you are in a criss and while you are in a good place both have it’s benefits. I will lay them out for you.

When in a crisis you will have immediate relief and a release of emotions. You will be engaged in co-regulation with your therapist and will learn how to implements the basic tools that work while you are triggers and your nervous system is dysregulation.

When you are in a good place this is where the magic can happen. As you are more regulated both your logical brain and your emotional brain are firing. This will allow you to explore deeper rooted patterns, retain information, and problem solve more effectively. Some of my most powerful sessions have happened when I show up not entirely sure what I will speak of.

Counselling is a powerful tool and a transformative experience that will allow you to grow into your fullest potential and get you the life you have always wanted to live.

Here are five ways in which counselling will change your life:

1. Increase self-awareness

Self awareness is the first step to change. Without self-awareness we are unable to shift the patterns that are no longer serving us. Counselling can help you understand your thoughts, feelings and behaviors better. This self-awareness can allow you to identify patterns that may be holding you back to make more informed decisions about your life.

2. Develop new coping tools

It will give you new coping skills, it will give you a tool kit to help you deal with difficult situations and emotions. You will learn effective strategies to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and any other challenges you may be experiencing.

3. Relationship growth

Counselling will help you better understand the relationships you currently have and attract future relationships that are aligned with your core values and beliefs. These relationships will make you feel loved, supported, and connected. Counselling will also provide you with communication skills to help you understand the needs and perspectives of others while will lead to more meaningful and fulfilling relationships.

4. Increased confidence & self-esteem

When we are connected to our worth we are able to set better boundaries, go after our goals, and speak our needs. This is a pivotal part of personal growth. Counselling will support you in getting to a place of self-love that radiates confidence.

5. Greater sense of resiliency

It is inevitable that life has sticky moments, one’s that you feel like you are treading through deep mud. Counselling will provide you with the skills that allow you to bounce back, to keep pushing through the mud, and to not allow these moments to set you back. In building your tolerance to distress, you will be able to show up for the life you truly desire and face adversity with strength and purpose.
