What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the mind-body connection. Our body is our compass, the ultimate navigation tool to understanding our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our body processes events before our mind can tell us it is happening.

The goal of Somatic Therapy is to help individuals identify and release physical sensations and emotions stored in the body in order to promote greater emotional well-being and healing.  while gaining a deeper understanding of what our body is trying to tell us.

How does Somatic Therapy work?

Somatic Therapy works by helping individuals become more aware of the physical sensations and emotions they are experiencing. The therapist may use a variety of techniques to help clients tune into their bodies, such as breathing exercises, meditation, or movement therapy.

Through the process of Somatic Therapy, clients learn to recognize how physical sensations and emotions are connected, and how they may be related to past experiences or traumas. Some techniques explored may include body scanning exercises, mindfulness practices, or guided imagery. As clients become more attuned to their bodies, they can work with the therapist to identify patterns of physical sensations and emotions that may be related to past experiences or traumas.


Is Somatic Therapy Effective?

Somatic therapy is particularly effective for individuals who have experienced traumatic events. In these events they have learned that their body is no longer a safe place and have therefore disconnected in the hopes of finding safety elsewhere. In somatic work you will learn how to come back home to your body and how to recreate a sense of safety.
